There are many different types of chiropractic care for different ailments. Chiropractors make mild adjustments to relieve and treat the subluxations by aligning the vertebrae causing nerve irritation using spinal manipulation. There are three main types of chiropractic care:

Relief Care: This type of care is for immediate relief from pain and discomfort. Its main goal is pain relief, and also focuses on correcting the problem. Some chiropractors will use other methods, such as TENS units (portable devices that block pain signals and stimulate endorphin production with electrical pulses), acupunctures or laser treatments. The frequency of visits is determined by the amount of damaged that needs to be corrected.

Corrective Care: This type of care is usually for spinal problems that have existed for a long period of time. It requires long treatment because of its severity. This care is usually long term and one should be prepared for it financially as well as emotionally.

Maintenance Care: This type of care is usually where one will have to keep returning to the chiropractor after his spine treatment has been completed successful. Because they believed that once the spine is damaged, even after rectifying the damage, it becomes weak thus it needs regular treatments to keep it healthy. Usually a person needs maintenance care every 2 to 6 weeks depending on his earlier problem.

In any form of health care intervention, chiropractic care poses its own benefits and risks of developing certain side effects. One of the benefits of Chiropractic care is that it is non-invasive. It doesn’t involve cutting, stitching and anesthetic that can often cause infection. It emphasizes on the patient’s inherent recuperative abilities that it could heal by its own. Chiropractic care is relatively quick and inexpensive. It doesn’t rely on pricy prescription of medicine or heavy medical equipments but rather fully rely on the handful skills and experiences of the chiropractors thus causing the cost down.

Although chiropractic care can do just about anything and while it is certainly a versatile treatment, it has its own disadvantages involving into a more serious conditions that can be life-threatening such as fracture of cervical spine, spinal disc herniation, caudate equine syndrome and even strokes. These conditions can cause pain, weakness, and numbness in the buttocks and down the legs. And even may affect bladder and bowel control that cause a longer healing period or even a permanent damage to one’s body.

Today, chiropractic has evolved into a highly developed science and art which deals not with the disease, but with vertebral subluxation and its effect on the body’s natural striving toward health. It recognizes and respects the body’s innate by striving to maintain its own health and has developed sophisticated techniques for correcting vertebral subluxation, a major interference to that striving. Therefore, receiving chiropractic treatments is a way of ensuring that every part of body is functioning as it should be. But even it has been widely accepted by some, it has its own controversies through the years.
